In Tones That Feel
Like Bruises (2026)
I use photography to disrupt the silence about abuse and to claim ownership of the telling and representation of what happened to me. In Tones That Feel Like Bruises visualises my experience of processing through flashbacks to psychological abuse that I have endured and survived. This series is an expression of fractured and compartmentalised memories and the feeling of drowning in the inescapability of flashbacks, overwhelmingly experienced all at once. They are the stuck stills of a movie that is trying to play its way out.
The green, yellow and orange tones of each photograph, looking and feeling like bruises, highlight the lack of visibility of psychological abuse, that is without physical evidence and yet is as consequential and devastating as abuse and suffering that can be seen.
