Appleby Horse Fair (2025)

The largest gathering of Gypsies and Travellers in Europe, Appleby Horse Fair brings people to Appleby-in-Westmorland in the north west of England every June. Horses are washed in the River Eden, shown off on 'Flashing Lane' and bought and sold. I visited the fair in 2025, one of 30,000 visitors attending. I felt a sense of welcome, and photographed stories of tradition, care and community here.
